  • 🤖 Give Me More

In their frantic hunt for data to train powerful AI systems, tech giants like OpenAI have harvested almost every last bit of web content available. And they warn that high-quality data (Wikipedia entries, scientific papers) could run out in the next two years. OpenAI allegedly developed a tool that transcribes audio from YouTube videos, inviting the possibility of copyright violation.

  • 😶 Do Not Disturb

A new California bill would guarantee workers a “right to disconnect.” The bill, if passed, would require all California employers to delineate working and non-working hours and create policies to protect people from unwanted communications during non-working hours. The California Labor Commissioner would be empowered to fine employers that repeatedly violate the law.

  • 🤔 Whose Line Is It Anyway?

ChatGPT tends to overuse certain words and phrases, including “delve”. According to one post, “delve” is among the 10 most common words found in text returned by ChatGPT. English entrepreneur Paul Graham offers data from this blog which found that academic papers with the word in the title or abstract were likely written with help from AI tools.

Uncharted Horizons

Personal Development | Success Story

Homeward Bound

Steve Chen has created quite a dent in Silicon Valley. As an employee of PayPal in 1999, he witnessed the historic launch of its first-ever electronic payments system. It was here that he met Chad Hurley and Jawed Karim. Together, they founded YouTube whose technology sent ripples in the world of tech.

In 2006, Chen led the revolutionary video platform through a $1.65 billion acquisition by Google. Later, he co-founded AVOS Systems, a tech platform for speedy app development.

The Asian entrepreneur has now returned to his homeland, Taiwan, looking for tech enthusiasts on the brink of creating radical technology. How? By building a project that supports the people there to hatch mega-companies.

The former YouTube founder believes that Taiwan’s engineering resources are far greater than in Silicon Valley with salaries just a fraction of what comparable firms offer in the US. Every fundraising dollar “goes much further in Taiwan,” he tells the SCMP. He added that Taiwan’s home-grown firms fail to find footing aboard due to the lack of access to foreign funding.

Taiwan boasts a talented pool of engineers, designers, and product managers, but struggles with access to venture capital.

Steve Chen

Steve says every successful company needs at least three things: good founders & staff, great ideas, and funding. Taiwan has everything but needs to catch up on investment. He is filling this gap brilliantly. Since 2019, Chen has been in Taipei, investing in early-stage startups. The unstoppable force of this creative genius led him to create ‘Brewing’ [a startup designed to offer digital medical services.] He admits to the challenges of building a venture in a new country. “It didn’t make it too far, but I think what was more valuable from that experience was being able to hire a team of engineers to try creating a global product,” he tells Rest of The World. More ideas are brewing in Steve’s head to help Taiwan reach the finish line. Partnerships with notable entrepreneurs like Twitch co-founder Kevin Lin are one of the many agendas on his bucket list.

Business Challenge Answer!

Last Week’s Quiz: Which prestigious London landmark hotel, known for its restaurant reservations, became a target for credit card scammers using call ID spoofing in August 2020?

Answer: The Ritz. In 2020, Diners at this London hotel were targeted by "extremely convincing" scammers who posed as hotel staff to steal payment card details. The scammers phoned people with exact details of their restaurant bookings, asking them to "confirm" card details. The fraudsters phoned people who had already made a restaurant reservation at the Ritz, pretending to be hotel staff.

Please Advise: How Do I Build A Winning Routine?

The human brain is wired to seek novel experiences and rewards. This can make predictable routines feel boring. Yet, it is crucial for navigating the inevitable chaos of running a business. When CEOs manage time effectively, they prevent burnout while creating a space for personal well-being. Here are a few tips to manage yourself effectively.

 #1) Using the “When-Then” Framework

Drilling in a realistic routine is about trying to turn a behaviour into a habit by tying it to an unrelated task one does regularly. For example: Updating a monthly project roadmap and then sending an invitation for a networking coffee with a new connection.

#2) Use the Gold Mine That is Your Networks

When you invest in an alumni program (via Slack groups, an old-school Facebook group, or in-person networking events), you are bound to reignite connections with past employees, boosting your talent pool through referrals and boomerang hires. This is a time-tested way to find the right fit for your company.

#3) Pre-Priming Your Audience

The next time you build your next slide deck, create a pre-read document to prime attendees with key information. This activity can spark deeper and more meaningful conversations.

#4) Fighting Isolation

Tackle workplace loneliness by adding a 10-minute connection conversation to your daily tasks. This entails catching up with a teammate about their recent vacation to pinging a coworker to chat about a recent project they completed.

#5) Habit Stacking With Breaks

When you finish a demanding task, reward yourself with a short enjoyable break lasting five minutes. This helps recharge your energy and motivation. Read a comic strip or tickle your brain with Sudoku. Ditch social media. Scrolling through endless feeds can be a real-time sink, making it easy to lose hours without even realizing it.
