Andrea Campos

She Suffered From Depression. Now Her Well-Being App Has 15 MM Users

Andrea Campos says she’s no mental health professional but is busy helping fight the epidemic of loneliness through her AI well-being app Yana (You Are Not Alone). The app provides users with emotional companionship in Spanish. Andrea recently launched its English-language version.

Campos struggled with depression for years before launching the application way back in 2017. “We designed and guard railed our chatbot’s responses with decision trees,” [concept in machine learning] she tells Rest Of World, Latin America

There are many AI companions in English but most aren’t designed for emotional companionship. We’re also focused on businesses

Andrea Campos

Crossing Hurdles

In 2022, when generative AI took the globe by storm, Campos believed it was far ready for mental health support. But her entrepreneurial instincts kicked in. Campos realised that if her app didn’t integrate the future technology, it would lag. Having started a venture five years earlier from the advent of AI, Andrea knew she had a vantage point. “We had gathered over two billion data points that have been invaluable for our app’s fine-tuning,” Andrea said. “It’s crucial to have a model tailored to the specific needs of a product,” she attests.

On Choosing a Crowded Market

With Yana’s entry into the US, the stakes are high with scrutiny and competition for new AI entrants. “There are many AI companions in English but most aren’t designed for emotional companionship. We’re also focused on businesses,” Andrea says confidently. “We believe it’s time to offer English-speaking users the same supportive tools that have helped millions in Latin America,” she said.
