He Had Zero Marketing Spends. Now He’s Attracting Clients on Reddit

Kamel Ben Yacoub, co-founder of pay-per-click agency Getuplead, started his business with zero marketing budget.

With a tone of competitor agencies, standing out was nearly impossible. Now Kamel could have done the grunt work, posting endlessly on LinkedIn, overflowing with expert advice or writing an array of articles for SEO, and conducting long webinars— all the conventional methods to get noticed as a newbie. But then he discovered the power of Reddit.

“I spent a lot of time on Reddit. I noticed business owners frequently ask questions about pay-per-click and social ads only to get answers from random people,” Yacoub told Buffer.

At first, he participated in many relevant threads, but it took a few months to build credibility. Then, potential clients started contacting him from Reddit. Getuplead landed 2 clients in 6 months, a great return considering their small client base.

Ace Marketing on Reddit: Tips & Tricks 🎯

#1 Don’t Be Anonymous

Using Reddit for self-promotion? Craft a profile telling people who you are and what you offer. Here’s what your profile should consist of:

  • Real name

  • Headshot

  • A short description of what your company provides links for your website and LinkedIn

#2 Choose Subreddits Strategically

  • Say no to big groups: Focus on smaller communities (think clubs) related to your expertise.

  • Find the right clubs: Search Reddit using keywords related to what you know.

  • Observe: Are people actively asking and answering questions? Is there room for your advice? In Kamel’s case, many of his niche-related questions were left unanswered for days, boosting his visibility.

  • Target mid-sized engaged clubs (500-5,000) members: Not too small or crowded and looks for active discussions.

  • Leverage SEO for visibility: Use Google to find common questions about your expertise. Consider contributing to relevant threads, even if older or crowded.

#3 Provide Value > Sell Services

Help people with their queries instead of being fixated on selling your services. Yacoub says he never included any CTA. “It’s just about answering the question and showing that I’m an expert— if they need more help, they can easily click on profile and explore ways to work with me,” Kamel says.

#4 Streamline the Process

Reddit is not as fast-paced as other social media platforms. One can get exposure despite them responding to a query a few days later. Yacoub for instance spends Tuesdays and Thursdays mornings going through specific subreddits.
