Making ChatGPT Write Like David Ogilvy. Results Are Out

David Ogilvy crafted iconic campaigns for Rolls-Royce and Dove. You're struggling to write a decent Facebook ad. Seems unfair, right? But what if you could leverage the power of AI to write like the master himself?

Understanding Ogilvy's principles and crafting the right prompts can transform ChatGPT's output from bland to brilliant. I Illustrate.

1) Feed AI with Insights on Good Writing

There are a couple of iterations to get to the final prompt. The real challenge lies in distilling the principles of Ogilvy’s writing into a prompt for a Chatbot. So it can replicate great writing for your posts and campaigns. I wanted to create a campaign to promote a fraud detection helpline Ogilvy’s way. Here’s what I did:

  • Fed ChatGPT with the best copywriting techniques according to Ogilvy.

  • Acquainted it with one of my favourite ad copies.

  • I redirected it to apply Ogilvy’s formula to my writing.

2) Never Accept AI’s First Output

Yes, ChatGPT is capable of becoming your personal Ogilvy. But it’s not all that simple. You have to prod it to write like the advertising genius would. One of the most effective ways to improve AI responses lies in questioning AI's edits to your original content. These can then be passed on to a team of copywriters who can apply the same set of rules while writing new copies.

3) Build Your GPT to Sound Like Ogilvy

Let’s call it “OgilvyGPT”. Here is a set of instructions to ensure your custom GPT delivers or edits engaging copy based on Ogilvy’s golden rules.

  • Clarity: Use short words, sentences, and paragraphs.

  • Write like you speak: Maintain a conversational tone. For example, Instead of saying “Commence your journey towards financial security” say “Start saving today”

  • Focus on benefits, not features: Instead of saying “This vacuum cleaner has a 12000 W”,  [vacuum cleaner name] makes your home spotless in minutes.

  • Avoid jargon: Replace “reconceptualize” with “think differently” and “judgementally” with “critically”

  • Edit ruthlessly: If a sentence can be shortened without losing its meaning, do so.

  • Here’s your guide to making any Custom GPT scratch.
